What is a Smart Port?
A Smart Port or intelligent port are defined as those ports that are committed to taking advantage of the use of technology to improve and optimize maritime transport activities. The objective of optimizing processes is to be able to improve times and processes in order to satisfy the needs of both customers and users.
Currently more than 80% of the goods traded around the world are transported by sea and it is expected that these figures will multiply up to four times in the year 2050; so this increase will atrophy certain processes later on. It is sought that in the future it can fulfill the economic demands. Security, port and environmental efficiency through the technological solutions that will begin to be implemented and evolve year after year.
Advantages of a Smart Port.
There are different advantages within the implementation of smart ports:
- Technological or digital transformation in all port operations, automation of cargo load, unload and storage to generate greater benefits.
- Energy efficiency since it will be easier to detect the possible risks for maritime transport, whether they are climatological or due to pollution levels.
- Transformation of companies due to the inevitable automation of the procedures.
- Increased commercial profitability, thanks to the optimization of the port process and its movements, will make the maritime transport process more effective in terms of time and resources, which can have a direct impact on the costs and final price of products and services.
The current changes.
Smart ports are on the rise and there are more and more industrial advances in ships and machinery. This tied to the new regulations regarding the care of the environment and the green logistics to which it is aimed.
In order to make operations more efficient, the Mexican Government implemented the Safe Smart Port system, which is an adaptable digital platform for each port administration; having as main objective the improvement of trust levels, efficiency in cybersecurity, since it is very important for port procedures and operations.
What is intended with this platform is that it be a model for exchanging information with the other platforms, so that everyone has access to the information they need to be able to operate efficiently, so that administrative issues are not a reason to delay the flow of goods, which is something quite agile.
